One thing leads to another.
Playing the bagpipes in the Boys Brigade 118th Company pipe band and by exposure, discovering the delights of the pipe band drum corps, Alan found his feet and began his performing career as lead guitar player in the cult Glasgow funk band, 'Contour'.
Fuelling his interest in jazz and after studying double bass, piano and composition at RSAMD, Alan found himself playing bass with numerous legends and would be legends such as Eddie 'Cleanhead' Vinson, Tommy Smith, Joe Locke, John Taylor, Derek Bailey and Candy Dulfer.
Moving to London, Alan joined forces with 80's pop band 'Kissing the Pink' whilst also being active in the orchestral, contemporary and early music scenes.
This diverse experience has enabled him to fashion his own individual approach to composition, which combines a love for the freedom and looseness of modern jazz and improvisation, and a liking for order and control, if indeed these elements can be successfully combined.
